A joint crackdown on fly-tipping and waste problems in Uttoxeter has identified 18 accumulations of rubbish on private land that need further investigation.
East Staffordshire Borough Council said its latest Tackle the Tippers day of action took place on 30 September, bringing council officers together with Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire County Council.
The operation combined inspections and enforcement with a public information stall at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, where residents reported six new fly-tipping and littering issues.
Waste inspections and further investigations
Alongside the 18 cases involving refuse on private land, the borough council's enforcement team carried out 16 inspections of businesses' waste-disposal arrangements. Fourteen premises required further investigation.
The team also identified an abandoned vehicle needing further action and referred a licensing matter to the council's licensing team.
Environmental crime officers attended five fly-tipping incidents, three of which needed further investigation, as well as a littering case and reports about abandoned vehicles.
These are matters identified for follow-up, rather than findings that each person or business involved has committed an offence.
A mobile CCTV officer found another previously unreported fly-tipping incident, identified a new hotspot for a camera and installed seven anti-fly-tipping signs.
Residents raise concerns at leisure centre
The information stall was staffed by the council's enforcement technical support officer and a police community support officer, with support from borough councillors P Krupski and Z Krupski.
As well as the six new fly-tipping and littering reports, visitors raised other concerns, with dog fouling a recurring issue.
Two police community support officers took part in the wider operation. The borough council's anti-social behaviour officer also identified driving and parking issues and passed them to the relevant teams or agencies.
Parking officers issued 11 penalty charge notices in total: four from the borough council's team in council-owned car parks and seven from the county council's team for on-street parking breaches.
Council urges residents to report fly-tipping
Councillor Simon Slater, cabinet member for communities and regulatory services, said the operation showed the council's commitment to working with partners, hearing residents' concerns and taking enforcement action where necessary.
“I would encourage anyone who witnesses fly tipping to report it so we can continue to protect and improve our local area.”
The council is asking residents not to touch or move dumped waste, which may be hazardous or contain evidence.
Its advice is to check the credentials of anyone paid to remove rubbish, keep a receipt and avoid leaving unwanted furniture, appliances or other items on pavements or council land.
Fly-tipping can be reported to East Staffordshire Borough Council on 01283 508506 or through its website.
